Island Chaptal—nerdy IT engineer by day, romance novel junkie by night—just walked into her messy New York apartment to find Mr. Right waiting for her. No, wait…Mr. Clean.
A gentleman professional killer with a bad case of OCD and zero tolerance for unsorted laundry, March wants the diamond her late mother stole for a sinister criminal organization. Island agrees to help him find it, facing the kind of adversaries who dismember first and ask questions later. Good thing she’s got March to show her the ropes. And the guns. And the knives.
The buttoned-up Island is soon having a blast racing from Paris to Tokyo following the clues in her mother’s will, and for the first time, she’s ready to get close to someone. For real. And it could be the tropiest, cheesiest romance ever between her and a brooding hero with impeccable manners and sexy chest hair, if only the bullets would stop raining, dammit.
Discover the bestseller that started it all, book #1 in Camilla Monk's wacky, sappy, high-octane Spotless series.

This is a laugh out loud story of a wall flower who is kidnapped into an adventure by a clean freak assassin. I loved her inner thoughts and how the author didn't make her totally helpless (she is fluent in quite a few languages and is quickly able to figure clues). I kind of thought her computer skills would come into play, but no such luck. The assassin, March is a mystery, even at the end of the book - but you realize that he is a good guy and has honor. Definitely one of the more unique heroes I've had the pleasure of reading about - he has OCD, is controlling, but not some lust filled alpha jerk. One of the things that makes this book so special is how the author pokes fun at all the romantic trope out there - it's a joke I never thought got old and I hope she continues using it in book 2.
This brings me to the critical part of the review and it's kind of spoilerish, so stop reading if you don't want to know what to expect in the book:
- you are left on a cliff hanger. I am okay with authors doing this, but when you find out that the sequel won't come out until half a year or later, not cool. I usually forget the story by that time and have to reread the 1st book again to even understand the 2nd.
- this is categorized as a romance, but as the review of my title indicates, it's not. Yes, the hero says a few things, touches her a little to indicate he has an attraction to her, but really, there isn't any romantic involvement, despite the heroine throwing herself at him (more than once)
- this brings me to my biggest beef: it was uncomfortable how much the heroine was trying to have a romantic relationship with the hero. She bargains for a "date" and asks him a couple of times to take away her V-card. It made her too pathetic. This, combined with her lack of boyfriends made me feel pity for her and I just don't want to feel that way about the female lead. I'm really hoping in book 2 that the heroine is able to experience a romance/boyfriend before she meets up with the hero again
Anyway, I think the author is super talented and when she does eventually come out with the sequel, I will be sure to read it!

Spotless Spotless Series Book 1 edition by Camilla Monk Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This one is a lark. You take a virginal, socially isolated girl called Island, and get her kidnapped by an assassin who is part of a mysterious South African brotherhood, and send them to Paris and Tokyo in search of a hugemongous diamond Island's mother may or may not have stolen from a shadowy criminal organization called the Board....and you get fun.
Lots of fun with authentic french and Japanese (and extremely authentic Tokyo details which I adored including a fake organic hamburger restaurant) phrases, lots of bantering humor, and an alpha male hero with OCD who was arrested once because his double-crossing partner spilled a jar of marbles...and he had to pick them all up despite the police's imminent arrival.
I often don't necessarily enjoy the whole "kidnapper turned to lover" trope, although it's a well used one in romance circles. Part of March (assassin) and Island's relationship seems a bit unwise/hard to stomach on Island's part as he treats her alot like Cary Grant treats Audrey Hepburn in the movie Charade-- kind of like a small child. Luckily Island gets a bit of agency in the last bit of the book that redeemed her for me.
There's also some occasional language oddness....where I found myself rereading lines and not entirely sure how they fit into the story, but only about two or three times.
This is light-hearted fun with a low steam level (remember Island's a virgin, folks) and an ending that while concludes the main diamond escapade, definitely leaves you wanting for more in terms of the main relationships. I'll be going to buy the next book in the series )
4.5 stars. It was just another ordinary day for Island Chaptal, except that she left work early. Only to go home and find a well dressed and groomed intruder in her apartment, meticulously snooping through her...tax returns. Wait...what? Well, that certainly got my attention. Because what kind of person, pray tell, makes a priority of looking through someone else's boring paperwork? There's not a whole lot of black mail material in there, because in the brief description of Island thus far, fraud is not a word that would be used to describe her. She's too intelligent and law abiding for that. And that's when this fun tale begins involving a hit man named March searching for a very valuable diamond to which Island likely holds the key to finding through her late mother, who was the last person to have it in her possession. Personally, I loved Island's personality although maybe not all readers will. She was so endearing and socially awkward in such a way that I couldn't stop laughing. For someone as smart as she is, her common sense or ability to see what's right in front of her is a bit lacking, yet she can deduce much bigger puzzles and problems quickly. As for March, never have I met such an interesting character who is so lethal, controlled and over the top on his OCD tendencies towards order and cleanliness that I couldn't get enough of him. The story has the right balance of humor, suspense, tension, action and surprises. Between wanting to know what was going to happen next or anticipating what Island or March would do and snickering, I was thoroughly entertained and enthralled. I'm excited to see what book 2 will bring.
