Tristan Gans' first effort, Stranieri, sheds new light on the Italian experience for Americans. No longer a student, yet not an expat, Gans provides a unique perspective of the joys and (many) challenges of living abroad. He paints a complicated portrait of the city of Brescia, the Italian Academy, and the precarious position of Italy in the world economy. Unsure of their station in a town heavily populated with African and Eastern European immigrants, Gans (and his now wife) find companionship in unlikely places. Though not a love story, Stranieri hits many of the right chords conveying a young couple's year abroad.
This book is a must for anyone interested in an honest glimpse of American life abroad. I look forward to whatever comes next from this talented young author.
Gans's "Stranieri" is a thought-provoking read about life as an "outsider" in Italy. Well written with vivid descriptions that put you in the center of it all. I was initially drawn to this book because of my strong attachment to my own Italian roots and my own feelings of being my own "stranieri." Gans delivers a "no-holds-barred" account; as a reader, I appreciate and enjoy his frankness in his writing.
I'll admit I first bought this book because of the cover. Then I started reading and got so quickly immersed in the story I was halfway through before I knew it. Who doesn't wish they'd done what the author and his girlfriend did after graduating from college? True, this young couple faced some challenging situations - can't imagine being Sarah and trying to teach those high school boys! - but Gans's vivid and straightforward writing makes it not only a tale of learning how to live in a completely different culture, but a tale of two people in love. I really loved this book.
Having been to Italy twice myself, and knowing what it feels like to be a "straineri," stranger, there, I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Gans' memoir of moving to Brescia and adjusting to life in this colorful country. His expert eye and strong prose capture the experience with just the right touches. I loved his descriptions of the expat life, the daily challenges, the African men in their expensive suits, the Pakistanis dealing in the real estate market. A great read for anyone who enjoys Italy, and travel in general.
Tristan Gans has written a thorough and realistic account of what it is like to take up residence in a foreign country and try to fit in. In an attempt to escape the complacency of American life, Gans and his girlfriend transplant themselves into a cultural back drop that leaves him, at times, feeling like the proverbial fish out of water. Through a diary-like description of daily living, Gans is able to give his readers a true taste of immersion in an Italian working class city far from the tourist attractions. His frustrations and joys are palpable in his clear and conversational writing style, as he stumbles along attempting to make friends and establish a community among the natives and other ex-pats. After reading Gans' account of life beyond one's comfort zone, you will not look at immigrants the same way. Gans' gift is that he imparts insight into the immigrant experience that will allow you to empathize and be more patient with people you may encounter who are trying to find their way in this country when it is not their own.
I wish I had bought this book before I traveled to Italy last month. When I arrived in Rome, I was fully prepared to be absorbed into the culture as part of an extended family, but not entirely prepared to also be greeted as a stranger - not exactly what I expected as I made a visit to the land of my ancestors. This kind of thoughtful and deeply detailed travel writing deserves a place alongside high quality guidebooks as something every visitor should use to be prepared when making their own trip to Italy, and had I read this first I would have had a glimpse into the complexity of what it means to be of a place but not quite. In addition, Gans shares his own story, almost a coming of age, against the backdrop of new surroundings and heightened sensations, and it is this personal part of the tale the truly draws the reader into the book. With a winning combination of sharp observation and wide-eyed wonder, Gans's voice is one worth listening to.
